Robin Venu Uthappa (born 11 November 1985) is an Indian cricketer. He plays for Karnataka in domestic cricket and Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL.
Uthappa made his One Day International debut in the seventh and final match of the English tour of India in April 2006. He had a successful debut, making 86 as an opening batsman before being dismissed run out. It was the highest score for an Indian debutant in a limited-overs match. He is nicknamed 'The Walking Assassin' for his tactic of charging the bowler. He played an important role in India's win at the 2007 ICC World Twenty20. He finished the 2014–15 Ranji Trophy season as the highest run-getter.
st.Robin Uthappa is a Christian, like his mother Roselyn and sister Sharon. His mother Roselyn is a Malayali. His father, Venu Uthappa, a former hockey umpire is a Kodava Hindu.
As a batsman, Robin Uthappa had an innate ability to hit the ball and clear the ground at will. After a string of dominating performances with the bat in the 2005 edition of the Challenger Trophy, the hard-hitting opener from Karnataka was given a chance to don the national colours against England in Indore in 2006. Though Uthappa scored a breezy 86 in that game he was still out of national reckoning for sometime. However when he got a chance in the 2007 Natwest Series in England, he made his presence felt by scoring a steely 47 at Oval to take India to a thrilling 2-wicket victory. With an ability to bat at the top of the order and flexible enough to bat lower to finish games, Uthappa was touted as a stable bat in the Indian line-up. His agility on the field and capability to score runs quickly came to the fore in the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup in 2007. A string of inconsistent performances in the series to follow saw him out of the national side and Uthappa was back to the grind working out his technique with a view to play “correct cricket”. A renewed and refreshed Uthappa took center stage in the 2013-14 domestic season scoring four centuries and hit the headlines for his consistency with the bat. He continued his good run in the 2014 edition of the IPL for the Kolkata Knight Riders and was the leading run-scorer in the tournament . He had scores of 40 or more in ten successive innings and was instrumental in KKR’s victorious campaign that year. A good domestic season and a successful IPL earned Uthappa a place in the India ODI squad for the Bangladesh series in 2014.
