Rohit Gurunath Sharma born 30 April 1987 is an Indian cricketer. He is a right-handed batsman and an occasional right-arm off break bowler who plays for Mumbai in domestic cricket. He is the captain of Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League and has been one of the most successful batsmen in the IPL.
Having started his international career at the age of 20, Sharma quickly came to be pegged by many analysts as a permanent fixture in the Indian cricket team in the next decade. In 2013, he started playing as an opening batsman for the Indian ODI team, and performed consistently. He scored consecutive centuries in his first two Test matches against the West Indies in November 2013, scoring 177 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on debut, followed by a score of 111* in the next Test at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
On 13 November 2014, he scored 264 against Sri Lanka at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, which is the highest individual score in ODIs and thus became the only player in the world to score two double-hundreds in ODIs. He also holds the record for being the only player to score 250+ in ODIs.
Rohit Gurunath Sharma was born in Maharashtra to Telugu speaking parents hailing from Visakhapatnam of Andhra Pradesh. Rohit speaks fluent Telugu,Marathi language. He completed his primary education at Our Lady of Vailankanni High School Borivali, Mumbai, then enrolled in the Swami Vivekanand International School Borivali on a scholarship, after his talent was noticed by the school's cricket coach Dinesh Lad at a summer camp. He excelled in the Giles and Harris Shield school cricket tournaments, after which he was selected for the Mumbai Under-20.
He was later chosen for India's Under-17 and Under-19 teams, and made his mark at the 2006 U-19 World Cup in Sri Lanka, finishing 11th on the ranking of top run-makers in the tournament.
On 13 November 2014, Rohit Sharma became the highest individual ODI scorer with 264 runs against Sri Lanka at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata. He also became the only player to hit two double hundreds in ODI cricket match
He broke the record set by Shane Watson for Most runs from fours and sixes in an innings by scoring 186 runs.
With 33 fours, Rohit Sharma hit the most number of fours in an ODI innings.
Rohit Sharma, with 16 sixes, has created cricket history by recording most number of sixes in an ODI innings. Shane Watson had recorded 15 sixes during his innings of 185 not out off 96 balls vs Bangladesh at Dhaka on 11 April 2011
Each time Rohit Sharma walks out to bat, the word “talent” features more often than not amongst his fans and the cricketing circles. For many, Rohit Sharma is a gifted batsman and an immensely talented cricketer who is pleasing on the eye with his elegance and ability to time the ball. He got off to a good start in his international career with crucial contributions in the T20 World Cup in 2007 and the CB Series in Australia. He almost made his Test debut in 2010 against South Africa but he injured himself on the morning of the Test match; Rohit would then have to wait for three more years to finally represent India in whites. Rohit continued to take giant strides in the shortest format of the game and attracted a lot of attention by achieving success in the IPL. He also led the Mumbai Indians to their maiden IPL title in 2013. His inconsistency for the national side though saw him in and out of the Indian team until he got a chance to feature in India’s tour of the Caribbean in 2011. Rohit proved to be a revelation there and bagged the Man-of-the-series award. He later had an on and off career graph stringing in useful contributions for India in ODIs. He was then promoted to open the innings, a move that proved to be a masterstroke for India as Rohit began to prove his critics wrong batting with a lot of freedom and exuberance. He scored an ODI double century against Australia in Bengaluru; a feat that was achieved by Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag before. In 2013 he made his Test debut against West Indies in Kolkata and straight away made an impression with a century as if to say he belonged. He followed it up with yet another century in Mumbai against the same opposition which paved way for his entry into the Test side more frequently. He did have a poor run overseas but these are still early days in his Test career and India see a lot of potential in him in Tests as well.
