Ranganath Vinay Kumar (About this sound pronunciation (help·info)) (born 12 February 1984) is an Indian cricket player who has represented India at Test, One Day International (ODI) and Twenty20 levels. He is a right-arm medium fast bowler who plays domestic cricket for Karnataka and also in the Indian Premier League for the Mumbai Indians. He captained Karnataka to two consecutive Ranji Trophy titles in 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons.

Vinay Kumar was born in Davangere, Karnataka, on 12 February 1984. His father was an auto rickshaw driver. He attended a government school in Davangere before graduating from the A.R.G. Arts and Commerce College with a Bachelor of Commerce degree. Vinay Kumar married Richa on Dec 02 2013.

Cricketing website ESPNcricinfo compares Vinay Kumar's style of bowling to that of Venkatesh Prasad, saying that he relies "more on outswingers, legcutters and accuracy, than on outright pace". His lack of pace in his Test debut against Australia in January 2012—bowling at 120 kilometres per hour in his opening spell—was criticised by former Pakistan fast bowler Wasim Akram as "disappointing". On the other hand, The Indian Express noted about Vinay Kumar's performances in his breakthrough 2010 IPL season: "He doesn’t bowl too fast nor too slow, and he doesn’t have threatening in-swingers or the deliveries that shape away from right-handers. But if there is one art that Vinay Kumar has mastered, it is the all-important one of picking up wickets.

Vinay Kumar is not your definition of a fast bowler who will run hard with giant strides and bowl at a voracious pace. Vinay Kumar is one who believes in swinging the ball, setting up batsmen and relying on his subtle variations in pace to get the better of his counterparts. He had a prolific domestic season after he was first picked to play for Karnataka in the 2004-05 Ranji Trophy season.

Kumar soon began to nurture his tricks and becoming successful at the same time picking up more than 20 wickets in each of his first three seasons. But that was not the best of Vinay Kumar that everyone had seen, Kumar’s moment of reckoning came in the 2009-10 domestic season claiming an outstanding 46 wickets. His brilliance in the domestic season bore fruit as most of the IPL franchises kept a keen eye on drafting Vinay into their side. He was a regular for the Royal Challengers Bangalore as the franchise shelled out a million dollar contract – quite literally. He made his ODI and T20 debuts in 2010 and two years later made his Test debut at Perth against Australia. Kumar was not as impressive as he promised to be, claiming just one wicket in that Test. Kumar though came back strong leading Karnataka to their seventh Ranji Trophy in the 2013-14 season. He claimed 29 wickets in the tournament and also showcased his batting prowess with 242 runs in nine innings along with a century to his name.
